Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our San Mateo DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

San Mateo, California - DNA Testing

Experts Say...

Schoenberg Family Law Group, serving San Mateo, explains why it's important for unmarried parents to establish paternity. "Paternity is critical in order to obtain a child support order and give children access to all of their legal rights and available benefits, including health insurance and inheritance," the law firm states. "Paternity can provide a number of benefits not only to the child but to the parents as well. Most importantly, it offers a chance for both father and child to establish a relationship as biological family members and develop a true family in the years to come." The law group also points out that without establishing the biological father, a child has no legal entitlement to financial benefits like life and health insurance and that they miss out on important financial support. Not establishing paternity also denies important emotional ties that the child would develop with their father.

Establishing Paternity in San Mateo, CA

San Mateo parents that aren't married must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. The easiest way to establish paternity is by signing a voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity form. The form should only be signed if both parents agree on paternity. If the parents cannot agree to sign the voluntary form, they can establish paternity in court, and DNA testing may be used to determine paternity.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in San Mateo, CA

DNA testing may be required if ordered by the court or if the mother and alleged father disagree on paternity. For example, a mother may claim that the man is not the child's biological father. In this case, DNA testing can prove paternity. Otherwise, the man will have no rights to the child. Once paternity is established, the father must share financial responsibilities with the mother. He can also seek visitation and custody orders, and the judge can issue child support orders.
