Roanoke, Virginia: Drug abuse trends

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia experienced a significant increase in drug overdoses, around 41 percent. In 2020, Roanoke's numbers were not as high as Virginia's, but the city still experienced a 25 increase in fatal overdoses.

Virginia reported the year 2020 as the deadliest for opioid-related fatalities. The increase in deaths that involved opioids was 47 percent. Fentanyl, a potent opioid responsible for deaths across the country, was involved in over 72 percent of all fatal drug overdoses in Virginia. From 2019 to 2020, Virginia experienced a 71.7 percent increase in fentanyl-related deaths.

Cocaine was another significant threat to the state as its presence in fatal drug overdoses rose by 33 percent. On a lighter note, fatal drug overdoses involving heroin decreased in 2020.

Roanoke man sentenced for conspiring trafficking of multiple different drugs

A 39-year-old man from Roanoke was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for conspiring to traffic drugs into Roanoke Valley. He intended to distribute 500 grams of methamphetamine, 500 grams of cocaine, 400 grams of fentanyl, and 100 grams of heroin. Evidence showed that he transported over 100 pounds of narcotics into the community.

The man admitted to making multiple drug runs and paying $130,000 for narcotics in one transaction. Investigators discovered that he often flew to meet his contacts in other states, and then his couriers transported the drugs he had purchased by car.
