Local News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Port Orchard, WA

In April 2023, a federal grand jury convicted a Port Orchard man for his role in a large-scale methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine trafficking operation. The Port Orchard man was convicted on possession with intent to distribute controlled substances charges, which can incur a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and up to a $10 million fine.

The case was pursued as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative that collaborates with local law enforcement to reduce violent crime in the area. According to reports, law enforcement was made aware of a Port Orchard man planning to distribute meth and fentanyl following a warrant arrest. Officers went on to locate the Port Orchard man, where they discovered 4,212 fentanyl pills, approximately 1.8 pounds of methamphetamine, and roughly a pound of cocaine inside his vehicle.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Port Orchard, WA

In May 2023, Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed a new drug possession bill into law that keeps drug possession illegal in the state. This action comes after existing felony possession laws were overturned in Washington Supreme Court and the expiration of temporary laws would result in the legalization of all drug possession in the state of Washington. The new law implements increases to possession penalties by up to 180 days in jail or a $1,000 fine for the first two convictions.

This new law also kickstarted the development of a pretrial diversion program for drug offenders in need of substance abuse treatment. Those charged with possession now have the option to have their charges dismissed if they agree to enter a court-ordered substance use disorder treatment program. Officials hope that this program will help repeat offenders direct themselves away from addiction concerns, ultimately resulting in a safer community for all residents.
