Pasadena belongs to Harris County, which is one of the many counties in the United States struggling with fentanyl. Daily, more than one person dies because of fentanyl in Harris County. From 2019 to 2021, the number of deadly overdoses increased by 52 percent in the county. In the same period, the deaths that involved fentanyl rose by a staggering 341 percent. In 2021, Harris County had at least 1,102 fatal drug overdoses, but this number is estimated to be even higher since not all fatalities are tracked.

Fentanyl is an opioid about 50 times stronger than morphine and is even more likely to cause an overdose. Many people die without even knowing they took fentanyl because it is often mixed in with some other substances.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Pasadena, TX

Texas is fighting the opioid epidemic with a prevention campaign called Drug Free Texas, with the primary goal of reducing underage substance abuse in the state. Drug Free Texas provides information about drug impact, common street names for drugs, where to get help, consequences of use, and warning signs. They believe that youth, parents, and educators can converse on these topics and help prevent more overdoses.

In Pasadena, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program created a website called StopDrugs Pasadena. The website helps educate the public about the dangers of substance abuse, and it allows residents to report tips and leads to law enforcement.
