Palatine, IL – Drug Testing

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Cook County

Palatine is a part of suburban Cook County. Data provided by the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) states that in 2020, there were 487 opioid-related overdose deaths in the county. This represents a 36% year-over-year increase. The synthetic opioid fentanyl was the biggest contributor, showing up in 83% of the victim’s toxicology reports.

In response, the CCDPH is now offering in-person and online training and distribution of naloxone kits to local community service organizations. This life-saving drug can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and quickly restore respiration to someone who is overdosing.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Palatine

Non-felony drug offenders living in Palatine and the surrounding area may be able to turn their lives around by taking advantage of Cook County’s Drug Treatment Court. This program uses a team approach to intervene on a drug addict’s behalf, providing intensive, court-monitored drug treatment that lasts from 18 months to two years. Requirements include frequent court hearings, inpatient or outpatient rehab, attending support groups, and adherence to the treatment plan, which may include getting a GED or obtaining employment.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Palatine, IL

Like many states across the country, Illinois has a “Good Samaritan” law that protects individuals who intervene in a drug overdose. According to Palatine-based Cohen, Donahue and Salazar Attorneys at Law, the Good Samaritan law protects anyone who calls 911 to report a drug overdose, takes an overdose victim to the hospital emergency room or a medical facility, or administers naloxone as an emergency treatment before seeking medical help.

In any of these situations, both the overdosing individual and the person who assists are immune from being arrested for many drug possession crimes. However, this does not apply to the person who sold the overdose-causing drugs or those in possession of large amounts of illegal drugs.
