In 2019, the Cook County Department of Health (CCDPH) received a $4.7 million grant to fight the effects of the growing opioid epidemic in Arlington Heights and surrounding cities. Using the provided funding, CCDPH has partnered with public and nonprofit organizations to launch an extensive opioid overdose prevention initiative.
The initiative follows four major components to aid in the fight against deadly opioid overdose and abuse. The approaches include opioid overdose and Naloxone (overdose reversal drug) use training, distribution of Naloxone to community-based organizations, assistance establishing prevention programs, and data collection to help inform public health efforts. With these efforts, local officials hope to reduce overdose numbers and provide stronger resources to help keep citizens on the right track.

In August 2019, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction Act into law. This act allowed the establishment and ongoing operation of syringe services programs (SSP) throughout Arlington Heights, Cook County, and surrounding Illinois areas.
