Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Omaha, NE
Following updates to Nebraska law in 2018, Nebraska health professionals are required to follow new rules and regulations when it comes to dispensing opioid prescriptions. These new laws come as part of a state and nationwide effort to curb substance abuse and reduce the spiking risk of deadly opioid overdose.
Under LB 931, medical practitioners may no longer prescribe more than a seven-day supply of opiates for both underage patients and any patient being treated for an acute condition. There are exceptions in place for patients dealing with severe health conditions, such as various cancers, as long as the medical professional properly documents the exception.
Furthermore, under LB 931, if a medical professional has not previously prescribed opioid medications to the patient, they will be required to discuss the risks associated with using these medications. Helping a patient comprehend their risk of using opioids can help not only reduce addiction risks but concerns of deadly overdose as well.
