Substance abuse statistics for Oklahoma City, OK
Oklahoma City, OK: Drug abuse trends
Despite Oklahoma’s steady annual decline in drug overdoses, data from 2020 still showed a 22 percent increase in drug overdose deaths in the state. Experts blame the pandemic, which frequently caused people to remain isolated at home, and many could not get the professional help they needed.
The state saw 135 more people dying due to unintentional overdoses than the previous year, and isolation was a significant reason making these numbers higher. Social distancing was often accompanied by depression and anxiety, causing some people to resort to substance abuse as a coping mechanism.
The use of fentanyl and methamphetamine was another reason the numbers were higher in 2020 for overdose deaths. Fentanyl has become increasingly accessible on black markets. People who sell drugs often mix them with fentanyl, so people taking these drugs may not even know they are using fentanyl.
