Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse
In response to the growing opioid crisis, Oklahoma City has seen an increase in the availability of fentanyl test strips. These strips are a cost-effective and quick method to detect the presence of fentanyl, potentially saving lives by preventing fentanyl-related overdoses. The rise in fentanyl overdose deaths has underscored the importance of these harm-reduction tools in the community.
Additionally, SHRED the Stigma, founded by Drew Cook in the summer of 2022, is making significant strides in combating drug overdoses in Oklahoma. This nonprofit is the state's first to deliver harm reduction kits, partnering directly with the State of Oklahoma. Funded by fundraisers, private donations, grants, and state-provided naloxone and fentanyl testing strips, SHRED has achieved remarkable success. In just over a year, their efforts have led to over 1,000 overdose reversals.
Local Drug Busts or Events
In Oklahoma County, a significant drug bust occurred on December 23, 2023, after a traffic stop conducted by an Oklahoma City Police officer from the Criminal Interdiction Team. The vehicle, which was speeding near I-40 and Peebly Road, contained "Christmas-wrapped packages" that, upon inspection, were found to hold a substantial amount of drugs. The discovery included 38 lbs. of cocaine and 42 lbs. of methamphetamine hidden within the wrapped boxes. The authorities arrested the driver and took him to the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
