North Las Vegas, NV: Drug abuse trends
In 2019, Nevada was the 28th state for opioid overdose deaths and 20th for the number of opioids prescribed. When COVID-19 hit the USA in 2020, Nevada also noticed a sharp increase in drug overdose deaths. Nevada saw a 227 percent increase in fentanyl use, and opioid-related emergency department visits rose by 26 percent.
Nevada also experienced a significant increase in polysubstance overdose, illicit drug consumption, and heroin and other opioid use among pregnant women. Compared to 2012, opioid use among pregnant women has quadrupled just ten years later in 2022.
Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in North Las Vegas, NV
In 2010, the PACT Coalition was formed in Nevada. The coalition's primary mission is to create programs that support substance abuse prevention. The PACT Coalition focuses mainly on prevention strategies, especially for youth who may be at risk of substance abuse. They aim to prevent substance abuse among all age groups and promote education, stigma reduction, support, and outreach.
The RX Abuse Leadership Initiative of Nevada (RALI) partners with leading organizations nationwide to reduce prescription medicine abuse and help educate the community about drug and opioid overdoses. RALI encourages the safe use, storage, and disposal of prescription medicines. The organization assists with finding takeback centers for unused prescription medications and provides guidance on how to safely dispose of these medications at home if a takeback center cannot be located near you.
