Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our North Las Vegas DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

North Las Vegas, Nevada - DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in North Las Vegas, NV

A child conceived by and born to unmarried parents does not automatically have a legal father in Nevada. Establishing paternity can ensure that the child has access to benefits from both parents and that the parents have full rights and responsibilities toward the child.

In Nevada, parents can sign a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity when the child is born. This form must be notarized and filed with the Nevada Office of Vital Records. The hospital can usually assist with this process.

Another way of establishing paternity is through a court hearing, which is usually done when parents do not agree on paternity or if one party is not cooperative. When the court is involved, DNA testing is often required to determine whether the alleged father is the biological father. After the court receives the DNA test results, the judge can establish paternity.

DNA test helps Nevada mother and son reconnect after almost five decades apart

Kirk took a DNA test to learn more about his ethnicity. It was a bet with his wife. He never expected to find his birth mother and reunite with her after 48 years! At first, when he saw the connection between them, he thought it was a scam. Later, when he arrived home from his son's graduation, he realized he might actually meet his birth mom after almost five decades.

Kirk was born in Vietnam and adopted when he was two years old. When he was seven months old, Kirk's grandparents took him to an orphanage without his mother's permission. She quickly found out and went to get him back. A few months later, it happened again while she was at work. This time, she wouldn't see her son again for 48 years.

She had been looking for her boy her whole life, even moving to the United States to search for him. Although she searched for years, she couldn't locate him until she finally took a DNA test. She said that after 48 years, she is finally spending Christmas with her boy and not feeling depressed like any other Christmas. Shortly after they met, she also helped him locate his birth father.
