Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our North Dartmouth DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Reunites Father and Son in Dartmouth

After decades of searching, a DNA test finally helped Dartmouth resident Jason Campbell reunite with his biological father. Campbell, now 42 years old, had started trying to find his father when he was a teenager. However, it had never panned out.

After his DNA test linked him to an uncle, named Simon, they were able to narrow down the search and identify Jason’s father. It turned out that Simon’s brother Mark was his mother’s high school boyfriend. Although Mark had known Jason’s mother was pregnant, she had told him the child wasn’t his.

The two have since met in person and were surprised by how many similarities they found. They continue to communicate regularly and look forward to spending even more time together in the future.

Dartmouth Woman Finds Half Siblings After 62 Years

Linda Crawford was adopted in 1951 at just two months of age. When she began searching for her birth parents as an adult, she hit many roadblocks. Then, thanks to DNA test results, she was able to identify her birth father. Although Manuel Andrade was deceased, he left behind five children.

Eventually, Crawford reunited with her half-siblings in North Dartmouth. When she came to the door, her siblings were surprised to find that it “wasn’t an unfamiliar face.” As they got to know each other, they were amazed at how much they had in common. Crawford’s new family has welcomed her with open arms and completely changed her life.

Establishing Paternity in North Dartmouth

In the state of Massachusetts, if a child is born to unmarried parents, that child will not have a “legal father” unless the parents take steps to establish paternity. According to Percy Law Group, local attorneys serving North Dartmouth and the surrounding area, there are three primary ways to establish paternity in Massachusetts.

First, if a woman is married when she gives birth, her husband is automatically presumed to be the child’s legal father. If the mother is unwed, the parents can either file a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity or pursue a court order to establish paternity.
