In March 2021, a Nashua man received a 120-month prison sentence for trafficking fentanyl. The 28-year-old man was stopped in his vehicle in 2018 by Nashua police after numerous traffic infractions. Officers noticed a small bag coming out of the center console of the car, and he was the only one in the vehicle. He admitted the bag contained drugs. After searching the vehicle, officers discovered a larger bag that contained more than 15 grams of fentanyl, and he admitted to police that he had another bag hidden in his pants. He also admitted that he was distributing fentanyl in the Nashua area. In 2019, officers executed a search warrant on the man's home, where they found white powder, a scale, and pill capsules. He admitted to police he was getting fentanyl and cocaine from Lawrence, Massachusetts. During the time he was awaiting his prison sentence, he was arrested for multiple drug-related crimes.
Experts Say...
In January 2023, Chris Stawasz, regional director of American Medical Response, spoke about the increase in opioid overdose deaths in Nashua and Manchester, the two biggest cities in the state. "The product that is out there is much more lethal than it was in the past," Stawasz said. "There is synthetic fentanyl in pretty much every drug that is available to people right now, so there is no safe experience using illicit drugs anywhere." Local officials also warned about an animal sedative, xylazine, that's being detected in more overdose deaths in Nashua and Manchester.
