Montrose, California – Drug Testing

Substance Abuse Statistics and Trends for Montrose, CA

The LA County area, including the city of Montrose, has been battling drug overdoses for some time. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has made things much worse. In 2021, approximately 2,442 people in LA County died of overdoses. This is more than double the 1,059 overdose deaths recorded in the county in 2015 and marked the seventh year in a row that overdose deaths had increased in the county. In addition, deaths among LA County’s homeless population soared by 56% in 2021, driven primarily by drug overdoses.

Local Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Montrose

In 2022, in an effort to curb overdose deaths in Montrose and the rest of the county, LA County Health Officials distributed 50,000 free packages of Narcan®, a drug designed for emergency treatment of opioid overdose. Narcan is the brand name of the drug naloxone, which reverses the effects of opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, andmorphine. Each of the packs included two doses of the life-saving drug. They were distributed throughout the county, including in homeless camps. The drug is also available in vending machines outside Los Angeles County jails.

Recent LA County Updates Regarding Marijuana Use

Adult recreational marijuana use has been legal in the state of California since November of 2016. However, the state is still addressing legal issues that have arisen from this change. In September of 2021, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that his office would dismiss approximately 60,000 cannabis convictions. According to Gascón, this is part of “ongoing efforts to reverse the injustices of drug laws.”

In addition, in April of 2022, Assembly Bill (AB) No. 2188 was introduced in the California Assembly. If passed, it will make it illegal for employers to discriminate against adult employees and job applicants based on their marijuana use “off the job and away from the workplace.”
