Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Montgomery, AL

In June of 2022, in Montgomery, AL, 18 people were arrested on gun and drug charges during a multi-agency operation. The operation, led by the United States Marshals Service, worked to fight against violent crime in central Alabama. The operation ran from June 6th through 17th. The Montgomery residents faced charges that included possessing a stolen firearm, possessing a controlled substance, possessing a firearm by a convicted felon, and possessing a controlled substance with the intent to distribute.

Experts Say...

In June of 2022, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office warned residents about the increasing number of overdoses in Montgomery and central Alabama. "If you're buying drugs on the streets of Montgomery, you're playing Russian roulette with your life. We saw a 30% increase in drug overdoses in 2020 and then a 15% over that last year, so it is continuing to rise. It has not slowed down, unfortunately," said Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey.

Bailey said they are seeing a rising number of overdoses, sometimes two or three per week, and autopsies show fentanyl toxicity. "These drug dealers are putting fentanyl in just about everything that they can now," Bailey said and warned Montgomery County residents that fentanyl has been found in methamphetamine, marijuana, pills, heroin, and cocaine. Bailey said that anyone selling drugs in Montgomery will be prosecuted.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Montgomery, AL

Law enforcement officers in Montgomery are equipped with Narcan, a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses. Montgomery residents with opioid addiction and their family and friends can also access Narcan without a prescription. Once individuals complete Narcan training, a kit will be mailed to their residence.

In addition, fentanyl test strips were legalized in Montgomery and the state of Alabama in June of 2022. Fentanyl test strips can detect the presence of fentanyl in other drugs, potentially preventing overdoses.
