Midwest City, Oklahoma: Drug abuse trends

The state of Oklahoma faces an ongoing battle against substance abuse, particularly with methamphetamine. In 2021, while oxycodone overdoses caused at least 43 deaths, and fentanyl was associated with 299 fatalities, an alarming 603 lives were lost to methamphetamine abuse. Despite legal actions and interventions to curb the opioid crisis, Oklahoma County saw 344 drug overdose deaths in 2022, amidst a state total of 1,181, indicating a persistent rise in daily substance-related fatalities.

Major drug bust in Midwest City led to the arrest of man

In April 2022, police arrested a man in Midwest City after a major drug bust. Agents served a search warrant to a place tied to an illegal marijuana sales investigation. They found several hundred pounds of processed marijuana, over 300 cultivated plants, cash, and a stolen firearm. The authorities also found a pound of cocaine. A 50-year-old man was arrested. Mark Woodward, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, said, "It appears they were using this location to grow, package, and transport marijuana to the illegal market. Our investigators traced large loads of marijuana from this location trafficked into Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Illinois, and Georgia."
