Memphis, TN – drug abuse trends

Texas was not only facing the COVID-19 pandemic but also a drug overdose epidemic, which increased by almost thirty percent in 2020—the highest level ever recorded. Tennessee ended up among the top ten states with the greatest change in percentage between 2019 and 2020. In these years, there was a 45 percent increase in drug overdose deaths in Tennessee.

Recent studies suggest that the COVID-19 increased mental health problems and substance abuse not only in Tennessee but nationwide. Many Tennesseans experienced depression, anxiety, and more people consumed alcohol. Experts suggest that social distancing and other guidelines could have negatively impacted many individuals’ mental health. On top of that, it was much harder to access treatment facilities, leading to increased drug overdose deaths.

Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Memphis, TN

Memphis has multiple initiatives to curb substance abuse. One is Tennessee Recovery Navigators, which consists of people in long-term recovery helping patients who have recently overdosed. They try to connect them with the substance abuse treatment and recovery services they need. This program began in 2021, and navigators have already worked with almost 7,000 patients.

According to The Sycamore Institute, Tennessee will receive $52 million towards targeted behavioral health funding through September 2025. About $25 million of these funds are allocated for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant, and $27 million will go towards the Community Mental Health Block Grant. This money could help immensely with curbing substance abuse and helping those who are struggling with addiction or mental health.
