Laredo, TX: Drug abuse trends

The proximity of Laredo to the Mexican border has resulted in major fentanyl drug trafficking issues. In 2021, officials seized 588 pounds of fentanyl in the Laredo Sector. As of July 2022, Customs and Border Protection has prevented another 155 pounds of fentanyl from entering the country. The number one cause of death in the United States for people younger than 45 is drug-related, and street use of fentanyl plays a considerable and detrimental role.

An organization called SCAN (Serving Children and Adults in Need), which assists people who struggle with substance abuse, has observed an increase in people with opioid addictions like fentanyl. In 2020, there were 95 deaths reported in Webb County, all of which were opioid-related.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Laredo, TX

Laredo/Webb County Drug & Alcohol Commission is working to educate people about drug and alcohol abuse, spread awareness, and support people through prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and transitioning or aftercare.

Webb County Community Coalition organizes activities, such as Drug-Free Dances for youth aged between 8 and 17, that encourage lifestyles free from drugs. Such events are planned to educate young people about the benefits of being drug-free.

Locals also started a Substance Abuse Distribution and Mortality project, which should help them stay informed with the most current data. They are primarily focused on conducting surveillance and analyzing data for the generation of reports to better evaluate substance abuse prevalence, mortality, and awareness.
