Lancaster, California: Drug abuse trends

California is the number one state for fatal drug overdoses. From 2019 to 2020, Los Angeles County had a 52.4 percent increase in fatal overdoses. Fentanyl and methamphetamine were the most common substances involved in overdoses. In 2020, fentanyl was involved in at least 3,946 fatal drug overdose deaths in the state of California.

In Los Angeles County (LAC), drug overdose deaths ranked as the third most common cause of accidental death behind homicide and automobile accidents. Although this issue is most common among people between the ages of 18 and 25, drug abuse and overdose deaths affect every age group in Lancaster.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Lancaster, CA

Los Angeles County's Strategic Prevention Plan is working to fight substance abuse and lower drug overdoses in the county. The plan details missions and goals through 2025. Some main focus areas include alcohol use, marijuana use, methamphetamine use, and prescription drug misuse.

The primary goal is to lower the number of youth and young adults who abuse alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamine. For adults, the Stratetigc Prevention plans targets prescription drug abuse and aims to decrease the number of prescribed drugs.

LAC is working on increasing awareness about how harmful it can be to use or abuse drugs. The county is working to reduce the availability of alcohol and marijuana in retail to underage youth. They try to spread awareness of the dangers of methamphetamine and steer young people away from this drug.
