During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mississippi was the fifth state where drug overdose deaths increased the most. For many people, the pandemic increased stress and isolation levels, negatively impacting their overall mental health. Some of them turned to substance abuse or increased the frequency of substance use during this time.

From March 2020 to March 2021, drug overdose deaths in Mississippi increased by a staggering 51.6 percent. Deaths related to cocaine increased by 53.3 percent. Opioid deaths were even higher at 72.4 percent growth during the same time. Fatal overdoses from synthetic opioids (excluding methadone) were off the charts at a 131.3 percent increase.
