For instance, LCCA’s Safe Homes initiative aims to encourage Howell and surrounding Livingston County families to reduce the risk of at-home youth substance abuse by promoting multiple practices, including proper medication storage and ongoing adult supervision. Local News Events Relating to Substance Use in Howell, MI

In June 2023, the Eastern District of Michigan United States Attorney’s Office announced civil penalties against a pharmacy chain operating in the Howell area. According to federal officials, the pharmacy chain violated portions of the Controlled Substances Act after various Howell and surrounding Livingston County locations failed to maintain proper recordkeeping.

According to reports, the locations did not maintain a complete record of all Schedule II Controlled Substances dispensed across each pharmacy location. In fact, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) discovered the chain could not account for more than 30,000 oxycodone and hydrocodone prescription pills dispersed over the course of 18 months. Ultimately, the DEA deemed the chain failed to prevent the disbursement of dangerous controlled substances and issued a $180,000 penalty.
