Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Howell DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Howell, MI - DNA Testing

The Importance of Establishing Paternity in Howell, MI

Under Michigan law, when two Howell parents are not married at the time of their child's birth, the state will not automatically declare the legal father without the presence of a legally recognized marriage. In order for a biological father to gain his parental rights and responsibilities, unmarried Howell parents will need to navigate the legal process of establishing paternity.

In addition to declaring a child's legal father, it's important to note that Michigan Child Support Services will also require paternity to be established if either parent wishes to request monthly child support payments. The legal establishment will also aid the child in obtaining important benefits from the father, including social security, inheritance, and health insurance.

How to Establish Paternity in Howell, MI

To establish paternity in Howell, parents must sign and complete an Affidavit of Parentage form promptly following the birth of a child. Form completion can be finalized free of charge at the hospital or birthing facility immediately after birth or at a later date through the Department of Health and Human Services office or through the Livingston County Registrar's office.

Note that this process is completely voluntary and it's up to the discretion of Howell parents to ensure complete accuracy with the given paternity claim when submitting this form. If a Howell mother is unsure of who exactly her child's biological father is, it's essential that DNA testing is first used before moving forward with a paternity establishment.

Court-Assisted Paternity Establishments in Howell, MI

When one Howell parent refuses to establish paternity, whether due to paternity denial or general refusal, the other parent seeking the paternity establishment will need to seek assistance in Livingston County Court. A court-ordered establishment will begin once the parent files a petition to establish paternity.

From here, a Livingston County judge will issue a court summons requesting that the presumed father submit a DNA sample for paternity testing. If the court-ordered DNA testing successfully verifies a child's biological father, paternity can be established. Once established, the court system can also help with establishing parenting plans or child support agreements if necessary.
