Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Greensboro, North Carolina

Greensboro faces issues related to drug abuse daily. Rising opioid abuse, increased heroin addiction, and the introduction of new illegal drugs adds to this problem. Weekly, first responders must treat dozens of people who overdosed. Police, EMS, and fire must carry NARCAN—a drug that helps overcome drug overdose.

Greensboro has multiple local activities to curb substance abuse, such as a project awarded to the North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services. The project aims to improve outcomes for young adults and youth experiencing mental health issues.

Greensboro Area Health Education Center (AHEC) created an app to help citizens, health providers, and emergency responders access relevant information about drug abuse prevention and drop-off and treatment options in the area.

A Guilford County Drug Treatment Court also tries to prevent repeat drug offenses and rehabilitate people with substance abuse disorders. Some judges will refer people for substance misuse treatment rather than incarceration.

Ms. James went far beyond the norm. She has worked with me all day on getting an emergency situation covered. I was not able to access the Portal. However, Ms. James kept me informed at all times. Ms. James took a very early morning call. Never acted like I was a bother. She walked me through the process and made all the arrangements on an extremely tight time schedule. Saved our project hundreds of dollars in down time. I could not be more impressed!
