After a May 2021 traffic stop evolved into a large-scale drug bust, Michigan law enforcement announced the arrest of a Grand Rapids man. According to reports, law enforcement discovered a hidden compartment in the vehicle of Lorenzo Perez-Bernal that contained over 1,000 grams of cocaine. The arrest comes in part of a concerning trend across Michigan state, where HIDTA data demonstrates cocaine seizures have increased by a whopping 582% between 2015 and 2019.
In 2019 alone, the state of Michigan seized more than 609 pounds of cocaine, of which 39 pounds originated directly from Kent County. Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Grand Rapids, MI
A collection of bills aimed at reducing the growing concern of opioid abuse and overdose was passed by Michigan state officials in 2017. The 10-bill package implemented a variety of new regulations to target concerns of opioid abuse and illegal distribution across Grand Rapids and surrounding Michigan state.
The bills included a new max 7-day prescription for the treatment of acute pain. This limitation came alongside the mandated use of the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS), which helps monitor the flow of controlled substance prescriptions across the state and reduce the frequency of prescription abuse and fraud.
The bill package also targeted substance abuse on an adolescent level. The Michigan Department of Education must now follow a model program developed by the Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Commission. This program is used to instruct local students on the dangers of prescription drug abuse and what they need to do to prevent addiction concerns.
