Kent County received an opioid settlement; this is how they will spend it
Kent County leaders have finalized a two-year spending plan for the opioid settlement funds. The funds come from lawsuits against drug manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies. Kent County has already received nearly $4.7 million and is expected to receive more than $19 million in total through 2038. The funds will be allocated to critical areas such as treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and prevention.
The plan includes $200,000 annually to expand recovery coach services for individuals who have dropped out of treatment and $400,000 per year for jail-based treatment programs. Additionally, $30,000 will go toward distributing naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, and $125,000 will fund prevention programs in middle and high schools starting in the second year. Kent County Board of Commissioners Chair Stan Stek emphasized the personal toll of the opioid crisis, noting that 93 residents died from drug overdoses in 2023, with opioids involved in 68% of those deaths.
