Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Grand Rapids DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Grand Rapids, Michigan - DNA Testing

Establishing Paternity in Grand Rapids, MI

There are multiple ways to legally establish paternity in the state of Michigan. The easiest way is to complete an Affidavit of Parentage at the hospital following a child's birth. This completely voluntary form is used to legally declare a child's biological father, provide him with his paternal rights, and have the ability to have his name placed on the child's birth certificate.

Bear in mind, this paternity establishment method is completely voluntary. Grand Rapids parents must only complete an affidavit if they have full confidence in a child's paternity. If there is any doubt in a child's correct paternity, the two Grand Rapids parents should first conduct DNA paternity testing to confirm the child's biological father.

Navigating a Difficult Paternity Establishment in Grand Rapids, MI

If a mother or presumed father refuses to establish paternity in the state of Michigan, they can prevent the opposite parent from requesting child support services. In the event that a Grand Rapids parent refuses to establish paternity, the other parent will need to file a petition to establish paternity through Kent County Family Court.

A court-ordered paternity establishment process allows a judge to issue a summons for the refusing parent to appear in court, where they can initiate the establishment process. A DNA paternity test is requested to accurately identify the child's biological father, so the court can then proceed with establishing paternity as well as any court-ordered custody or child support agreements.

Experts in Grand Rapids, MI Say…

Following a tricky paternity establishment process, two Grand Rapids parents may also need to develop a custody agreement. According to Grand Rapids family law attorney Brian E. Gordon, Michigan law follows 12 "best interest" factors when deciding a custody plan.

Some of these factors include a parent's mental and physical health, the individual capability of providing basic necessities, and previous history of domestic violence. Following an assessment of these various factors, the courts will decide on a custody agreement that best fits the needs of the child.
