In April 2023, a two-day drug bust in Galveston led to the seizure of over 70 grams of drugs and the arrests of two people. The Galveston County Organized Crime Task conducted a search warrant at the 4700 block of 9th Street in Bacliff, finding one individual inside the residence, 41 grams of methamphetamine, narcotics paraphernalia, weighing devices, and packaging material. The next day, authorities conducted a second search warrant, finding the other individual, 32 grams of crack cocaine, weighing devices, and packaging material. Both individuals were charged with manufacturing and delivering CS PG 4G <200G (possession of a controlled substance).

According to Kathryn Cunningham, director of the University of Texas Medical Branch's Center for Addiction Research, Galveston County and the state are in a fentanyl crisis with no signs of improvement. "Texas, which is the second most populous state in the country, has seen a 70 percent increase in overdoses between 2020 and 2022," she said. When speaking of overdoses in Galveston County, Cunningham said, "If you look per capita, the overdose deaths here are more than in Harris County." She said that pharmaceutical companies are one main cause of the rising overdose death rates. She said, "Somewhere around the '80s, companies wanted to make money, so they started courting physicians to mitigate their patients' pain by using opioids." She also added that although opioid prescriptions have declined, the drugs still remain easily accessible. Cunningham said that most fentanyl ingredients are from China and made by Mexican cartels because it's inexpensive and easy to produce. Cunningham said that she knows a lot of people that lost someone to fentanyl. She added, "One of the major problems right now is that there is a lot of stigma and bias when we talk about overdoses and deaths caused by fentanyl."
