Durango, CO - Drug Testing

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Durango

In February 2022, the Southwest Drug Task Force and police department issued renewed warnings about the dangers of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, following the accidental overdose death of a Durango student. The student, who was a sophomore at Animas High School, was found unconscious and not breathing, and attempts at revival were unsuccessful. It's presumed that the student had ingested a Percocet pill, which was laced with fentanyl. Two other students were also hospitalized but were expected to survive.

Area law enforcement says they've seen a significant increase in fentanyl in the area, beginning in 2018, when heroin and methamphetamine were previously the drugs of choice. In 2020 and 2021, the presence of fentanyl in the area "really skyrocketed," being primarily found in counterfeit prescription pills. Since 2020, local law enforcement has confiscated thousands of these pills. In 2020, there were 1,477 overdose deaths in Colorado, a record for the state. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of fentanyl overdoses in the state doubled, reaching 540, and the number increased to at least 643 in 2021.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Durango

At La Plata County Jail, located in Durango, officials are addressing drug addiction and substance abuse among inmates by adopting a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. This complex and evolving program has been in place for several years. After an inmate in the jail successfully detoxes, they're offered a chance to participate in the MAT program, which includes an extensive psychiatric evaluation, peer support, and mental health services. Methadone or suboxone (also known as buprenorphine) is typically distributed to the participants, helping to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without creating full opioid effects. Jail staff say they're happy with the success of the program among inmates.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Durango, Colorado

La Plata County is making major efforts to curb drug use in Durango and the surrounding area. In August 2022, County Commissioners dedicated $331,187 of American Rescue Plan Act money to a collaborative opioid risk-reduction program that involves law enforcement, government agency departments, Manna, and other local organizations. The program includes clean distributions of fentanyl test strips, overdose reversal drugs, and clean needles.
