Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Durango DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Durango, CO – DNA Testing

Durango Man Meets 62-Year-Old Daughter Following a DNA Test

About a year after taking a DNA test, 32-year-old Lindsay Breed heard from a woman who stated that based on test results, they could be first cousins. While they determined the age difference between Breed and 62-year-old Jean Griffin was too large for this to be the case, they eventually realized that Griffin must be the half-sister of Breed’s mother Lori Moss.

After Moss and Griffin had a conversation, they immediately knew it was true. The two women and their brother Gregg Carlson immediately clicked, and they still speak regularly. When Moss broke the news to her 82-year-old father, he was shocked. Although he had a brief fling with Griffin’s mother many years ago, he never knew of the child’s birth. Jean and her father met for the first time at the Durango-La Plata County Airport, and she was thrilled. Discussing her newfound family, she said, “They have been nothing but wonderful from the word ‘go.'”

How to Establish Paternity in Durango, CO

When unmarried parents have a child in Colorado, the child is considered not to have a legal father until steps are taken to establish paternity. There are three primary ways to do this:

  1. Voluntary Acknowledgment – Both parents can sign and file a Colorado Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage form. This can be signed at the birthing center or hospital where the child is born, or later at the Office of Vital Records and Statistics. Once the form is processed, the man is declared the child’s legal father and his name is added to the child’s birth certificate.
  2. Administrative Order – Establishes paternity without the court system. This is typically initiated when one parent applies for child support. When the parents receive notice of the proceedings, they can request a DNA paternity test and provide additional information.
  3. Judicial Paternity Order – Occurs when paternity is established through a court hearing. To sue for paternity, either parent can file a case in the district court for the county where they or the child currently lives. Residents of Durango, CO, can file in the LaPlata County Courthouse, which is located at 1060 E. 2nd Avenue, Suite 150 Durango, CO 81301.

The Connection Between Paternity and Child Support

Child support is an obligation both parents owe to their biological children. According to experts at Durango-based Greenberg McGuinness & Alt LLC, legal paternity must be established before child support can be ordered. When a father signs a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity form, it becomes valid after 60 days. If a father doesn’t sign the form or denies paternity, a court order may be issued by a judge, requiring genetic testing. If the test proves the man is the child’s biological father, a child support order will be issued.
