Detroit, Michigan – drug abuse trends

The United States has been struggling with the opioid overdose epidemic for years. Annually, it kills nearly 48,000 people. In 2019 statistics showed high numbers, stating that youth ages 12 and 17 recorded marijuana as the primary substance abuse. However, young people are not the only ones struggling. In 2019, 7.2 percent of veterans in Michigan admitted to substance use disorder.

Every month, over 1.3 million people from Michigan abuse illicit drugs. Substance abuse often leads to drug overdose, and in 2019, opioids were linked to 75 percent of drug overdose deaths in Michigan.

Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Detroit, Michigan

Decaying infrastructure and high unemployment rates have contributed to drug and alcohol addiction issues. Wayne County is considered one of the unhealthiest counties in Michigan, with drugs and alcohol contributing to more than 13.4 percent of deaths in this area.
