The Detroit metropolitan area averages violent crime rates higher than the national average due to drug abuse and drug trafficking. According to data from the U.S. Department of Justice National Drug Intelligence Center, crack cocaine is the substance most often associated with violent crime in Michigan, at about triple the frequency of heroin.
Experts believe that the lack of accessibility to Narcan, a life-saving drug that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, is partly to blame for high opioid overdose death rates. In Michigan, many pharmacies cannot dispense Narcan without a prescription. Only about half of the state’s pharmacies participate in the Narcan program, which is a program that makes the drug available without a prescription. To complicate matters further, public figures show that those who seek substance abuse treatment in Michigan had to wait about 6.5 days on average for intake. This kind of delay can be fatal for many people.
Dearborn police searched house and found fentanyl and cocaine
Police found 468 grams of suspected fentanyl and 27 grams of cocaine in a house in Dearborn Heights. They also seized guns and $36,000 in cash. The 25-year-old man was accused of selling drugs, but authorities have not yet filed any charges.
