Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Carson, CA

The Los Angeles County Departments of Public Health and Public Works and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have collaborated to launch a Safe Drug Drop-Off Program. This allows residents to anonymously and safely drop off expired or unused prescription drugs, needles, controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications at designated drop-off locations. The drop-off sites are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no questions asked. There are currently 21 area locations, including the Sheriff’s Station at 21356 South Avalon Blvd., Carson, CA 90745.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Carson

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which serves Carson and the surrounding area, recently collaborated with several other organizations to launch the “Bad Meds” campaign, which addresses the ongoing problem of counterfeit pharmaceuticals. According to the Alliance of Safe Online Pharmacies, approximately 40% of counterfeit pills have a potentially lethal dose of harmful ingredients. The World Health Organization (WHO) also states that over 1 million deaths occur each year in connection with counterfeit or substandard drugs. The campaign was launched with a public service announcement featuring actor Danny Trejo.

In Carson and the rest of Los Angeles County, fentanyl is a growing problem. The public health department notes that overdose deaths in the county have skyrocketed in recent years, from 109 in 2016 to 1,504 in 2021 — a 1,280% increase. In 2021, 55% of the overdose deaths across the county were related to fentanyl ingestion. Sadly, in the 12- to 17-year-old age range, fentanyl was connected to 92% of drug overdose deaths. Emergency room visits and hospitalizations due to fentanyl overdoses have also increased in Los Angeles County. Many of the overdoses are due to dangerous drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine being mixed into counterfeit pills and consumed unknowingly.
