According to Louisiana's Substance Abuse Prevention Strategic Plan, West Baton Rouge Parish, where Brusly is located, is not as plagued by alcohol-related injuries and binge drinking as other parishes in the state (notably Cameron and Avoyelles), but alcohol abuse in Brusly is worse than in other parishes like East Feliciana and Ascension, which rank the lowest.

Louisiana is also affected by drug-related illnesses such as HIV/AIDs and Hepatitis C. Almost 10% of the new HIV diagnoses in women in Louisiana in 2018 were attributed to IV drug use, according to the Centers for Disease Control and NIDA.

Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Brusly, LA

The Healthy Community Coalition in West Baton Rouge Parish provides drug and alcohol services to Brusly residents. The Coalition meets at the West Baton Rouge Parish Health Center in Port Allen on the second Monday of every month between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. West Baton Rouge Parish also sponsors a DARE Program in Brusly.

Louisiana offers state-funded programs for substance use disorders, which can be located using the ATLAS Treatment Locator. Louisiana offers drug treatment services including withdrawal management, opiate treatment programs, and outpatient and residential drug and alcohol treatment. West Baton Rouge Parish has a Narcotics Division which covers Brusly and neighboring areas. The Division employs deputies and officers to patrol the parish and conduct undercover operations to detect drug smugglers and traffickers in the area. The Narcotics Division also employs K-9 drug-sniffing dogs which can detect illicit drugs in vehicles. The Division is a multi-agency task force targeting distributors and sellers of illicit drugs.

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Brusly, LA

The West Side Journal reported on a large local drug bust in Brusly in July 2020. Local resident Floyd Johnson, Jr. was arrested on July 21 for a traffic violation, and officers recovered methamphetamine, hydrocodone, heroin, MDMA, and other drugs in his vehicle. The arrest prompted an investigation which uncovered that Johnson had operated a drug trafficking business while previously incarcerated in the West Baton Rouge Parish jail.

A search warrant for a residence on Babytown Lane in Brusly uncovered additional heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA, and alprazolam (Xanax) along with other drugs and paraphernalia. Floyd Johnson, Sr. and Floyd Johnson, Jr.'s girlfriend Lauren Alexander were also arrested on warrants related to drug trafficking, possession, and sales.
