Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Broken Arrow, OK

The Broken Arrow Police Department has reported seeing a significant increase in fentanyl overdoses. In 2021, there were 186 calls to the police for overdoses and officers administered Narcan 13 times. Broken Arrow Police Sgt. Eric Nester notes that the need for Narcan in the month of December was more than twice the amount for the entire rest of the year. Nine of the 13 Narcan doses were used in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. Police say one of the reasons for this uptick is the trend of fake prescription drugs being laced with fentanyl.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Broken Arrow

In an effort to address the recent uptick in fentanyl drug overdoses, the Broken Arrow Police Department held a public forum in July 2022 to educate the community about the dangers the drug poses. Officials say the city has seen a 50% year-over-year increase in fentanyl overdoses in the first half of 2022. Panelists highlighted the distribution methods that are being used, primarily the dangers of laced pills that appear to be other narcotic drugs. They also highlighted just how small of a dosage it takes to kill a person and offered a question-and-answer session for attendees.

In addition, Jeff Dismukes, with the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, says that they are initiating a program to distribute fentanyl test strips so people can test their drugs before ingesting them. While there has been some criticism that this may encourage illegal drug use, Dismukes says, "it's about keeping people alive."

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Broken Arrow

The streets of Broken Arrow are a bit safer now, thanks to a recent drug bust by Broken Arrow police. Following a six-month investigation, officials uncovered a large methamphetamine trafficking ring and issued 25 arrest warrants. The primary suspect is accused of arranging shipments of 50 to 100 pounds of meth from California and distributing it throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, and Sapulpa. While serving the warrants, police also seized 25 pounds of meth and several weapons.
