In Anthem, AZ and Maricopa County from October 2018 through September 2019, there were 1,389 fatal drug-related overdoses in the county. The majority of these overdoses were related to opioids, methamphetamines, or alcohol.
In 2019 in Anthem and Maricopa County, there were 1,078 fatal overdoses.
Ninety-one percent of fatal overdoses in Maricopa County in 2019 involved more than one drug. Ninety-two percent of these fatal overdoses were deemed accidental.
Opiate prescriptions are declining in Anthem and Maricopa County. In 2014, there were 3.1 million prescribed. In 2016, there were 2.3 million prescribed.
Sixty-six percent of all fatal overdoses in 2019 involved one opioid or more.
The age group with the most fatal overdoses in Maricopa County is 35 to 44 years old. Most of them were males.
In 2018, Anthem, AZ and Maricopa County had 420 deaths related to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

Government and Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Anthem, AZ and Maricopa County

MaricopaRX is an online tool, created by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, for fighting that opioid epidemic. This online tool connects law enforcement, community-based organizations, educators, and treatment providers. The group hopes to use this collaboration to accelerate the progress, especially in high-risk populations. MaricopaRX is also a resource for those working in health care that are seeking information and training about dispensing opioids.

Shot in the Dark (SITD) is a harm-reduction and evidence-based education group based in Maricopa County, run by a group of volunteers. The group aims to expand the syringe-access program to prevent the spread of IV infections, as well as to expand access to the life-saving drug, naloxone. The group says its mission is to let the community know that “their health does matter.”

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office wants the community to be aware of the warning signs of opioid abuse. The warning signs include:

Uncontrollable cravings and weight fluctuations.
Isolation from family or friends.
Financial difficulties.
Drowsiness and changes in sleep habits and hygiene.
Taking more opioids than prescribed.
Taking high daily doses of prescription opioids.
