Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Ada, OK

In June 2016, an Ada resident was arrested following a drug trafficking complaint. In a combined effort with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and the Ada Police Department, law enforcement agents arranged for an informant to purchase drugs from Brandon Rowell of Ada. The informant successfully purchased 29 grams of methamphetamine from Rowell for $500.

With this information, law enforcement issued a warrant at a shop building Rowell was currently renting in Ada. Inside the shop, agents successfully located 2.2 pounds of methamphetamine. But what really took law enforcement by surprise was the discovery of a 3.5 foot alligator inside the shop. It is illegal in Oklahoma to own alligators, and the reptile was confiscated by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife. Rowell was arrested on suspicion of trafficking a controlled dangerous substance.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Ada, OK

Before 2008, strict Oklahoma drug laws would send nonviolent drug and alcohol offenders to prison without the consideration of a treatment alternative. Fortunately, the Southern Oklahoma Addiction Recovery (SOAR) program was created to counter this issue. As an alternative to incarceration, the SOAR program provides a long-term therapeutic program to assist court-ordered, non-violent offenders with their drug and alcohol addiction recovery efforts. The program partners with the local criminal justice system, employers, churches, and community organizations to provide work programs for offenders to help them reacclimate to society.
