With the opioid epidemic creating a large impact on Wilmington and surrounding North Carolina cities, statewide efforts have been put in place to tackle all fronts of the concern. The local government has begun several initiatives, from reducing deadly overdose to mitigating the disease infection risk of drug use. In July 2016, updated law allowed for the establishment of the North Carolina Safer Syringe Initiative to promote scientifically proven ways to reduce infectious health risks connected with drug use.

The North Carolina Safer Syringe Initiative offers safe and legal syringe disposal, distribution of sterile syringes, and education materials to help those struggling with substance abuse. These education resources include information on disease transmission, overdose, and addiction prevention along with treatment resources including medication-assisted therapy (MAT).

Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Wilmington, NC

In May 2020, a Wilmington man by the name of William Gethers was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute and possess a large amount of heroin and cocaine. According to the investigation, Gethers was knowingly involved in the importation and distribution of heroin and cocaine throughout Wilmington between May and September 2019.

Following multiple undercover purchases from Gethers, detectives served a search warrant at Gethers’ Wilmington stash house, where they discovered 39,000 bags of heroin, 9 ounces of cocaine, and more than $10,000 in cash. Furthermore, detectives discovered an additional $44,000 and two handguns at a separate residence owned by Gethers. With an estimated street value of more than a quarter million dollars, this case was a successful component of local operation “White Rabbit” that focused on drug organizations importing heroin and meth into Eastern North Carolina.
