Wilmington, North Carolina: Drug abuse trends
Almost a thousand more people in North Carolina died from drug overdoses in 2020 than in 2019. Emergency departments in North Carolina had at least 15,000 visits related to drug overdoses, and these high numbers continued to grow even in 2021. Many experts suggest that the pandemic directly impacted these quickly climbing numbers. It took a toll on many people’s mental health and led to new or worsening depression and anxiety caused by uncertainty and isolation. On the other hand, since the numbers are constantly growing to this day, some experts believe that the rise is caused by the significant presence of the potent opioid fentanyl. Fentanyl is a hundred times stronger than morphine and has been making its way to the streets more frequently.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has created the North Carolina Opioid and Substance Use Plan to curb the number of people affected by drug abuse. The plan focuses on prevention, reducing harm, and connecting people to substance use services.
