Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Wichita Falls, TX
In response to a growing number of deadly opioid overdoses and abuse concerns taking place across Wichita County and the surrounding Texas state, the University of Texas developed the Texas Opioid Training Initiative to help provide communities with stronger resources. The program provides upwards of 10 hours of free, online continuing education for professionals to enhance their abuse prevention and response knowledge.
Likewise, local pharmacies operating in the state of Texas can apply for a naloxone standing order through the Texas Opioid Training Initiative. Naloxone is an emergency overdose treatment drug used to reverse the deadly effects of opioid overdose. With this standing order, the participating pharmacy or organization can distribute naloxone without a patient prescription if they believe an individual is at risk of an overdose.
Local News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Wichita Falls, TX
In August 2022, a warrant arrest by the Wichita Falls Police Organized Crime Unit and Gang Task Force resulted in a large fentanyl seizure. According to arrest reports, law enforcement was aware of the suspect’s prior outstanding warrants, first observed the suspect driving his Lincoln Town Car near Maurine Street and Central Freeway, and followed him to the parking lot of a local Motel 6.
At the time of arrest, the suspect told law enforcement that he had smoked marijuana in his vehicle, which resulted in a vehicle search. Inside the car, officers discovered approximately 287 counterfeit pills that were tested and found to be fentanyl. According to reports, these pills were the exact pill type taken by a local 20-year-old resident that had resulted in her overdose death.
