The Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and the Scioto County Sheriff's Department announced the successful takedown of a Wheelersburg area drug operation in January 2022. The successful drug operation takedown was made possible by the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission and their recently formed task force, the Southern Ohio Organized and Major Crime Task Force.

This task force was designed to help better combat organized and major crime operations, including drug rings in the surrounding region. The task force assisted in a Wheelersburg raid in January, where law enforcement discovered 131 grams of fentanyl, 77 grams of meth, two firearms, digital scales, a large amount of Gabapentin, a large amount of liquid Methadone, and $3,159 in cash.

At the time of the raid, law enforcement arrested three local residents, including Rocky Johnson, age 56, Christina Barnes, age 38, and Beverly Charles, age 65. Each suspect was charged with numerous drug possession and trafficking charges as well as felony weapons possession charges for their roles in the Wheelersburg area drug operation.

In 2018, the State Medical Board of Ohio enacted new regulations for prescribers in an effort to reduce prescription opioid misuse and addiction. Under Ohio Administrative Code 4731-11, Ohio physicians who prescribe opioids for the treatment of long-term pain or subacute pain will be required to establish ongoing checkpoints with patients.

Before beginning a long-term medication treatment plan, the physician must consider previous medications listed in the documentation of the patient's treatment plan. Then, the physician must engage in conversation to increase patient awareness of the risks of opioid misuse and addiction. From here, the physician must monitor the patient for signs of opioid misuse and offer a prescription for naloxone, an opioid overdose antidote.
