Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Hurricane, Wv

In March 2021, the Hurricane Police Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU) conducted a large drug bust, seizing drugs and cash during random traffic stops. Three traffic stops by the CIU led authorities to the seizure of over 100 pounds of marijuana worth $215,000, more than two pounds of crystal meth worth $24,000, a half ounce of heroin worth $2,000, a stolen handgun, and $6,000 cash. Within a month of the bust, another random traffic stop led a Hurricane patrol officer to seize a quarter pound of methamphetamine and $15,000 cash.

Experts Say...

In 2021, Hurricane Police Chief Mike Mullins spoke about the city's Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU), saying, "About a year and a half ago we started a Criminal Interdiction Unit, and we did it to try to keep drug activity out of Hurricane. They also serve warrants, so that's why it's the Criminal Interdiction Unit." Mullins also mentioned the random traffic stops in Hurricane in 2021 that led to the seizure of drugs and cash. "They pull random traffic stops, ask certain questions, and they get the reactions of the drivers, and they go from there to see if they need to investigate further into the traffic stop; that's why we're the interdiction unit." Mullins continued, "We're doing our best to keep the drugs out of Hurricane and keep our community safe. We're seizing drugs, were seizing guns, getting them off the street."
