Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in West Valley

In an effort to address the area's ongoing opioid problem, all Salt Lake County libraries are now offering free "rescue kits," which contain two doses of naloxone, a drug designed to reverse an opioid overdose. This is part of a program that has been in place since 2018. The libraries in Salt Lake County now give out about 500 to 600 kits each year. They're offered on a "no questions asked" basis and residents can receive a kit by simply requesting one. West Valley residents can visit their local library branch at 2880 W 3650 S, West Valley City, UT 84119.

Utah Overdose Deaths from Synthetic Opioids are Surging

According to data released by the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, the state experienced 122 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the first three quarters of 2021. This is a significant increase from the past few years. There were 91 fentanyl-related overdose deaths during the same time period in 2020 and only 39 in 2019. The Utah Highway Patrol also noted that between January and August of 2021, law enforcement seized over 85,000 fentanyl pills, which is up from just 6,000 in the entire previous year.

Salt Lake County Wins Landmark Settlement Against Opioid Manufacturers

Salt Lake County will receive a settlement of nearly $57 million from opioid distributors and manufacturers for their part in the "carnage" created by the area's opioid crisis. County leaders noted that this is one of the largest civil litigation settlements in the county's history.

Based on the numbers, Salt Lake County was the most heavily impacted by the opioid crisis. As a result, the county will receive approximately 43% of the state's $133 million settlement. The impact was determined by examining the number of pills distributed, number of deaths, and rate of opioid use disorders versus the size of the county's overall population.
