Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in West Harwich, MA

In May 2022, Barnstable County law enforcement announced the successful raid of a Harwich area residence that resulted in multiple arrests and a large seizure of narcotics and firearms. The raid came as part of an ongoing investigation that consisted of the Barnstable Police Department, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Cape Cod, and the Massachusetts State Police.

At the time of the raid, law enforcement discovered two large-capacity firearms, ammunition, a bulletproof vest, and 679 grams of cocaine with a street value of approximately $50,000. Law enforcement also arrested four adults and one juvenile at the residence, who were charged with a variety of offenses, including the improper storage of a large-capacity firearm and trafficking 200 grams or more of a Class B controlled substance.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in West Harwich, MA

In March 2016, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker passed the Act Relative to Substance Use, Treatment, Education, and Prevention in an effort to curb the deadly ongoing effects of the state's opioid epidemic. This was the first law in the U.S. to create a maximum seven-day supply for first-time opioid prescriptions, paving the way for future legislation in other states.

The law also created a maximum seven-day day opioid supply rule for all prescriptions involving minors, regardless if it's a first-time prescription. Accompanied by various prescriber Prescription Monitoring Program regulations, this new legislation works to reduce the risk of addiction in both adolescents and adults while also working to reduce the risk of prescription fraud and misuse.
