Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Waterford, MI and Oakland County

Oakland County teamed up with partners to form a coalition aiming to prevent prescription overdose deaths. The team studies fatal and non-fatal overdoses to determine the mechanism and evaluate interventions. One effort of the coalition is to provide safe medication disposals to residents of Waterford and Oakland County. The group urges residents not to flush unused, unwanted, and expired medication down the toilet but rather safely dispose of them at one of their disposal locations. The group also provides substance use prevention programs and treatment resources.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Waterford, MI

Waterford Police have committed to the Hope Not Handcuffs initiative to bring together law enforcement and the community in hopes of curbing opioid and heroin use. Waterford residents struggling with addiction can come to the Waterford Police Department seeking help for their addiction. Waterford officers will obtain information and contact a Hope Not Handcuffs angel coordinator, a volunteer who responds in 15-20 minutes. The angel volunteer obtains information and helps the individual seek appropriate treatment. Hope Not Handcuffs began in 2015 and includes more than 30 police agencies. The program has helped over 900 people seek treatment.
