Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Tucson
Tucson's Pima County has been struggling with increasing overdose deaths over the past few years. In 2019, there were 337 overdose deaths. This number climbed to 446 in 2020 and 498 in 2021. The Pima County Health Department says that more than half of these deaths have been related to fentanyl use. In 2021, the drug was responsible for 59% of all overdoses while methamphetamine contributed to 41% of overdose deaths.
The Tucson Police Department issues Naloxone, a drug designed to reverse opioid overdoses, to all of its officers. Since the program started in 2017, it has saved over 100 lives.
Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Tucson
In response to the community's record-high drug overdose deaths, the Tucson Police Department has taken an unconventional approach. After conducting undercover investigations for over a year, police invited suspects to a meeting at the department, presented evidence against them, and gave them a second chance.
They were offered a one-time opportunity to walk away from the life of crime and turn their lives around. If they were arrested again, however, they would be charged with the new crime as well as all of the crimes that had been documented over the past year. Each suspect was offered substance abuse treatment, education, job training, transportation assistance, and more. They all elected to sign a non-binding agreement; two months later, none had yet to be arrested again.
