After struggling with addiction as a teen, Rabbi Shlomo Uzhansky found sobriety. With it, he was able to establish a religious career, a marriage, and a family. However, after relapsing on prescription pain pills, and, later, fentanyl, he lost everything. Now, he is publicly sharing his story in the hopes of raising awareness regarding available treatment options, fighting the stigma of drug addiction, and offering hope to those who have not yet overcome their drug problems.
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Staten Island
Preliminary data showed that fatal drug overdoses in Staten Island decreased slightly in 2021. However, the borough's drug problem is still very concerning. The office of District Attorney Michael McMahon stated that it investigated at least 79 drug-related deaths throughout the year. In addition, at least 126 fatalities were avoided thanks to the use of the life-saving anti-narcotic drug naloxone.
In 2020, there were 132 fatal overdoses and 115 "saves." There were 92 drug-related fatalities in Staten Island in 2019. The year-over-year increase was blamed, in part, on the circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread availability of fentanyl-laced drugs.
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Staten Island
In May of 2022, a Staten Island man was sentenced to 210 months in prison for distribution and possession with intent to distribute narcotics, according to a DEA press release. Between July 2018 and April 2019, he had sold at least 40 grams of fentanyl and heroin laced with fentanyl, resulting in at least two overdose deaths.
Nalerton Charles pleaded guilty in November. NYSP Superintendent Bruen is quoted as saying, "Mr. Charles's sentencing illustrates the work of a strong law enforcement partnership that has resulted in a dangerous individual being taken off the streets."
