Overdose Deaths Drop in Brooklyn for the First Time in Eight Years
Like so much of the U.S., Brooklyn has been hit hard by the deadly opioid epidemic. In the last decade, thousands of people have died from drug overdoses in Brooklyn alone. Officials recorded almost 1,500 overdose deaths in Brooklyn in 2018, second only to the Bronx in fatality numbers. While these numbers may seem bleak, officials were happy to report that the number of fatal overdoses in Brooklyn had actually dropped in 2018 (the last year for which statistics are available) for the first time in eight years.
Just Brooklyn and Queens reported a decrease in fatalities, while Staten Island, Manhattan, and the Bronx have continued to see fatality rates rise. The decrease was so significant in Brooklyn, however, that it pushed New York City’s overall rate of fatal overdoses down. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says, “I am encouraged by the report that overdose deaths went down citywide, and declined significantly in Brooklyn. While we have a lot more work to do, I believe that the approach my Office has taken — those arrested with any controlled substance are offered treatment options to address their needs and naloxone kits to prevent overdoses instead of criminalizing them for drug use — is the most effective way to deal with this health crisis.”
How Brooklyn’s Unique Approach to Addicts is Saving Lives
Brooklyn officials have taken a proactive stance to helping drug abusers and stemming the overdose epidemic. For example, the city has created interdepartmental task forces to help addicts stay out of jail and instead get the medical care they need. It also provides hundreds of thousands of doses of the anti-overdose drug Narcan to city workers and officials so that they can administer immediate, life-saving care on the spot.
Over a dozen establishments have even opened up ‘safe injection sites’ in public bathrooms or other public spaces to provide addicts with a safe and clean location to get high. Most overdose deaths occur because a person is alone and unable to get the care they need quickly. In these locations, a worker checks in on the user every three minutes via intercom to make sure everything is okay. Innovative solutions like these — that destigmatize users and focus on their rehabilitation instead of criminalization — are what have contributed to Brooklyn’s decrease in fatal overdoses.
