Springfield, Missouri: Drug abuse trends

Drug overdoses have continued to increase throughout Missouri as the opioid epidemic surges, and Springfield is no exception. Through September 2021, the Springfield Fire Department received 335 opioid overdose calls. Compared to the same period in 2020, this was 25 more calls. The Chief of EMS and Special Operations stated that the people calling were mostly in their upper 30s, which was a little older than they would expect.

In 2021, Southwest Missouri struggled the most of any other region in the state with drug overdose deaths. The area saw an alarming 32 percent increase in drug overdose deaths. In 2020, Better Life In Recovery distributed 4,000 Narcan kits, and the organization is anticipating a similar number of kits distributed in 2022. Currently, the Springfield Fire Department is averaging 35 calls a month that are opioid-related. The police believe that carrying Narcan has made a massive difference.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Springfield, Missouri

The Community Partnership's Prevention Resource Center (PRC) in Missouri is focused on providing assistance, support, and training to anyone looking to reduce the rate of substance abuse in the community. The PRC has helped many communities form coalitions to combat substance abuse and focus on prevention efforts.

This PRC is one of the eleven in the state of Missouri. They all have similar agendas using different programs to help people in need and make the community a healthier and safer place for everyone.
