Policy Proposals Regarding Drug Laws in South Weymouth, MA

South Weymouth drug dealers may soon be held accountable for overdose deaths caused by the substances they sell. After a South Shore Massachusetts family found their 21-year-old son dead following the consumption of fentanyl-laced cocaine, they were devastated to learn that it was likely the dealer would not be charged with his death. However, they've now found support from Patrick O'Connor, a Weymouth Republican who is currently working to introduce a drug-induced homicide law that would allow prosecutors to bring charges against dealers who sell lethal doses, particularly when the drugs contain fentanyl. The push comes, in part, after the State Department of Public Health found that fentanyl was responsible for approximately 94% of drug overdose deaths that occurred in the state in the first half of 2022.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in South Weymouth

There are fewer drugs available in the South Weymouth area following the arrest and conviction of a 36-year-old Weymouth man who was found guilty of distributing over 44 kilograms of cocaine that was brought in from Puerto Rico. The man was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 8 years of supervised release and was ordered to forfeit over $91,000 in drug profits. He's described by authorities as a "significant wholesale cocaine supplier" who built a pipeline that brought more than $1 million worth of cocaine from Puerto Rico to Massachusetts.

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Massachusetts

While South Weymouth tends to be a quiet area in terms of illicit drug use, cities across the state of Massachusetts are struggling with the current opioid crisis. Preliminary data found that there had been 2,357 overdose deaths during the 12-month period, a number that reflects a 9% increase over pre-pandemic overdose fatalities. With 57 more deaths that occurred in 2021, the state saw an average of 6 overdose deaths every single day.
