Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Savannah, GA

In September of 2021 in Savannah, a crack trafficking ring was dismantled after multiple defendants were taken into custody. Fourteen people faced charges, mainly for the Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute and to Distribute Crack Cocaine, which comes with a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, substantial financial penalties, and four years of supervised release after prison time is served. The investigation took place on Savannah’s west side, and drug sales took place as early as October 1, 2020. All 14 defendants were Savannah residents.

According to the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT), the majority of overdoses occur between the ages of 25 to 40 years old.

Experts Say…

Michael Sarhatt, the director of the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT), spoke about the local fentanyl problem. “The amount of fentanyl that can kill you is so small that it’s a one-shot deal,” he said. “You could have someone just wanting to smoke a joint thinking it’s no big deal, and that could have been cross-contaminated with fentanyl, and they could end up dead.” Sarhatt said that this crisis is always changing and that awareness is key to solving this problem.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Savannah, GA

Residents of Savannah and Chatham County have access to Narcan, also known as naloxone, without a prescription. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses. Savannah residents who use or that have close family or friends that use opioids are encouraged to become educated on naloxone and responding to opioid overdoses.
