In 2021, Shasta County had a record number of overdose deaths attributed to fentanyl use. This powerful and deadly drug killed 40 people in the Redding area in 2021, which is almost six times as many as in 2020. The group most affected were people in the 25 to 34-year-old range; however, the drug affected people across all age groups and income brackets. Local doctors and other advocates strongly recommend efforts to make the overdose-reversing drug naloxone more widely available, hoping to help limit the number of opioid-related overdose deaths in the area.
Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Redding
The City of Redding Police Department's Neighborhood Police Unit (NPU) is a small task force led by one sergeant and consisting of four officers. Although small, the unit is quite effective at proactively keeping local neighborhoods safe. They often work with patrol operations personnel to identify and arrest individuals engaging in illegal drug crimes. Between July 2016 and July 2020, the unit was responsible for 1,800 arrests and the seizure of approximately 16,077 grams of meth, heroin, and cocaine. The group also distributes brochures to help the public identify suspicious activities and common drug-related behaviors.
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Redding
Redding's ongoing problem with its handling of local drug dealers came to the forefront in 2022 when a felon was arrested for dealing drugs for the second time in 11 days. The 31-year-old man was arrested for possession of 7.4 grams of fentanyl on April 3rd but was released within a few hours due to jail overcrowding.
He was arrested again for fentanyl possession and sales less than two weeks later after a citizen's tip led police to his apartment. Upon searching the apartment, police found an ounce of fentanyl, a small amount of methamphetamine, $2,500 cash, and evidence of ongoing drug sales. He was arrested for violation of probation, alleged fentanyl sales, and other charges. However, as of April 14th, he had been released and was no longer in police custody. According to Redding Police Sergeant Timothy Renault, the constant turnaround of suspects who have been arrested and quickly released is due to issues beyond the department's control.
