Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Pittsburgh, PA

In February 2019, two Pittsburgh area residents were arrested following a massive drug bust that Allegheny County law enforcement called one of the largest in recent history. According to reports, local police, alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigations, have been tracking the movements of two local residents linked to major drug trafficking operations in and out of Colombia and Mexico.

During surveillance, law enforcement pulled over the two suspects, Jermaine Clark and Terry Suggs Jr., after securing warrants for their arrest. During this time, law enforcement discovered a total of 50 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $10 million. The plastic-sealed packages of cocaine were hidden behind the rear passenger seat using hydraulic traps.

Investigators believe that the drug ring, operated by Clark and Suggs Jr. since 2017, brought hundreds of kilograms of cocaine into Philadelphia to then be distributed throughout Western Pennsylvania neighborhoods. Clark is believed to be the head of the operation with Suggs Jr. acting as the co-conspirator, both of whom were arrested and charged at the time of the cocaine seizure.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Pittsburgh, PA

With increasing concerns regarding deadly substance abuse issues across the Pittsburgh area, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, EverFi Education, and the FBI Pittsburgh Division have together created the Heroin Outreach Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative. The initiative focuses on the value of prevention education and its use amongst local adolescents.

Various organizations in the HOPE initiative have teamed up to create a PSA contest for local schools to create media that emphasizes the dangers and avoidance tactics of opioid use. These PSAs can then be viewed by the surrounding youth to help better spread the importance of prevention. Winners of the contest receive a VIP party package for a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game.
