Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Paterson, NJ

In 2021, Paterson Police announced two large-scale drug busts in an affluent area just blocks from the home of the current city mayor. According to reports, the first drug bust took place in the historic Eastside section of Paterson, where law enforcement discovered 1,117 heroin packets, 131 grams of marijuana, and 31 grams of cocaine.

The next bust took place at the Kent Village apartment complex, where detectives found more than 6,600 packets of heroin, a bottle of promethazine, more than $32,000 in cash, and a loaded firearm. Both drug busts came in part of ongoing narcotics surveillance after officials witnessed multiple local drug deals in which they believed the two locations worked as a stash house and selling location, respectively.

Laws and Regulation Relating to Substance Abuse in Paterson, NJ

Following a year that resulted in 3,081 New Jersey resident overdose deaths, Governor Murphy signed a new legislative package in January 2022 in an effort to expand multiple harm reduction initiatives. Under previous law, the statewide clean syringe program only operated through seven centers, which restricted access to those in need.

The new legislation will work to expand this program across the state to reduce the spiking rates of HIV and hepatitis infection caused by contaminated drug syringe use. The new legislation also established the development of local drug overdose fatality review teams that will be used to better assess cases of overdose death to identify opportunities that can prevent future fatalities.
